Investing in the Future: McKinley Architecture and Engineering Welcomes Its 2026 Summer Intern Class

This summer, we are proud to welcome a talented and diverse group of interns who represent the next generation of architects and engineers. Across our Charleston and Pittsburgh offices, these students bring a wide range of experiences, interests, and ambitions that reflect both the breadth of our profession and the strength of our growing connections with regional universities.
Our intern class includes architectural and civil students from institutions such as Fairmont State University, Kent State University, Lehigh University, the University of Dayton, and Carnegie Mellon University. Each brings a unique perspective shaped by different academic paths, personal interests, and career goals.
Among them is Sara Gates, a recent Fairmont State University graduate who will continue her architectural studies at UNC Charlotte this fall and brings a passion for travel and creative exploration. Jordan Sprouse, a Kent State University graduate returning for an accelerated M.Arch program, combines design interests with international study experience and a well-rounded set of personal pursuits. Corinn Brewer, a Lehigh graduate and future Clemson architecture student, stands out not only academically but athletically, with aspirations to compete at the Olympic level while advocating for expanded opportunities for women in sport. Aiden Powell, a civil engineering student from the University of Dayton, brings enthusiasm for teamwork, athletics, and the outdoors to his work with our Sports Division. Rounding out the group is Ishvari Chavan, a graduate architecture student at Carnegie Mellon University working out of our Pittsburgh North Office, further expanding the academic diversity and depth of this year’s intern class.
Together, this group represents a balance of disciplines, backgrounds, and experiences—from design and engineering to athletics, travel, research, and community involvement. Their diversity is a strength that enhances collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving across our teams.

Behind the growth of this program is the intentional effort led by Virginia Houck and Jeff Wessel, whose work has significantly expanded MKA’s internship pipeline in recent years. Through strengthened relationships with regional universities, increased campus engagement, and a more structured internship experience, they have helped position MKA as a destination for emerging talent. Jessica Horvat and Adrian Slider also worked on this program: Adrian by reviewing portfolios and Jessica was instrumental in making it all happen.
Their leadership has not only broadened the reach of our recruitment efforts but has also elevated the quality of the intern experience—ensuring that students gain meaningful, hands-on exposure to our work, our culture, and our commitment to service.
As we continue to invest in the future of our firm and our industry, this summer’s intern class is a strong reminder of the opportunities ahead. We are excited to have them with us and look forward to the impact they will make—both this summer and beyond.
