The renovation of St. Joseph’s Hall focused on transforming the existing fitness center into a dynamic hub for wellness and student life at Carlow University. The project not only revitalized the space but also addressed critical upgrades to support accessibility, energy efficiency, and modern campus needs.
A key feature of the renovation was the addition of a new elevator tower, strategically designed to enhance vertical circulation and ensure full ADA compliance. This intervention significantly improved access while also contributing to a more intuitive and efficient flow throughout the building.
Given the historic nature of the structure, integrating modern mechanical systems posed a unique challenge. However, substantial upgrades to the building’s heating and cooling systems were carefully executed to improve energy performance without compromising the architectural integrity of the facility.
The renovation was guided by a thoughtful design and programming process that aligned closely with the specific needs of Carlow’s athletics department and the university’s broader wellness initiatives. The result is a revitalized, accessible, and energy-efficient facility that supports both fitness and extracurricular engagement, and serves as a cornerstone of student life on campus.
